Dermatology

The Dermatology Department at JDWNRH, though one of the smallest units, is among the busiest outpatient departments. Managed by two dermatologists and one medical officer, the team is supported by a receptionist and nurses from the minor OT. Besides dermatology services, the department also provides STD services, along with voluntary testing and counseling.

Historical Background

The Dermatology Department has evolved significantly since its inception. The country’s first dermatologist, Dr. Sangay Thinley, paved the way for specialized care in Bhutan. Dr. Pema Rinzin became a full-time dermatologist in JDWNRH in 1997, followed by Dr. Tez Kumari in 2002, who has continued her service to date. In 2014, Dr. Ambika R. Pradhan joined as the first MD dermatologist, shortly followed by Dr. Choden as an MD dermatologist with the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA).

The OPD has moved locations several times before establishing its current layout, which includes two OPD chambers and a procedure room. Initially, there was no dedicated dermatology ward, and patients were managed in the Medical Ward with dermatology consultation. Today, the department has six dedicated beds in the Medical Extension Ward, supported by full-time nursing staff.

The Dermatology Department provides a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • General Dermatology
  • STD Services
