Cytology Section

The Cytology Section focuses primarily on gynecological specimens, particularly Pap smear screenings, to support early diagnosis and prevention of cervical cancer. The section also handles non-gynecological specimens, including various body fluids, sputum, and fine needle aspirations (FNAC) of lumps suspected to be malignant.

Key Activities
  • Pap Smear Screening: Major activity aimed at early detection and prevention of cervical cancer.
  • Non-Gynecological Cytology: Analysis of body fluids, sputum, and FNAC specimens to identify potential malignancies.
  • USG-Guided FNAC: Provides fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for patients with deep-seated lumps and nodules, guided by ultrasound.

The section is equipped with:

  • Automated Staining Machine for efficient and standardized specimen staining.
  • Multi-Headed Microscopes to facilitate collaborative examination and detailed analysis.
  • Expert Reporting: All specimens are processed and reported by skilled cyto-technicians and pathologists, ensuring reliable and accurate diagnosis.
  • Quality Assurance: Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and participation in the National External Quality Assurance Scheme (NEQAS) ensures consistent quality and accuracy in reporting.
  • Pain-Free FNAC Procedures: FNAC is performed by trained pathologists, ensuring that procedures are conducted with skill and minimal discomfort.
  • Pap Smear Results: Reported within a week.
  • Non-Gynecological Specimens: Results provided within 3 days.
