Branches of Clinical Departments

Anesthesiology

Not only provides the Anesthesia service, but also looks after Intensive Care Unit and Pain Management Service. It also provides education and research in the field of Anesthesiology in order to improve and provide the highest quality of patient care in accordance with the country’s developing philosophy of GNH.

Dentistry

The department is the largest dental center in the country providing primary, secondary and tertiary services and also serves as the teaching department of JDWNRH for the Faculty of Nursing and Public Health (FoNPH) under the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB).

Dermatology

Two Dermatologists and one medical officer currently run the Department of Dermatology with assistance of a receptionist and nurses from minor OT. Though dermatology is the smallest unit, it is one of the busiest OPDs in JDWNRH. The Department also provide STD services and voluntary testing and counselling.

Emergency

The Department consists of a team of Emergency Physicians (EP), General Duty Medical Officers (GDMO), Clinical Nurses, Staff nurses, Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Bhutan Emergency Aeromedical Retrieval (BEAR) Team and supporting staff.

ENT

The ENT specialist service was limited to JDWNRH, Thimphu. It was gradually expanded to regional referral hospital with the help of expatriate doctors. In order to meet the demand from the periphery and assist ENT surgeons, ENT technician course was started in 2005.

Forensic Medicine

The Department is mandated to provide Clinical Forensic Medicine services and Forensic Pathology Services. The Department provides medico-legal services to victims of interpersonal violence, sexual violence, and domestic violence as well as work related and road traffic accidents.

Gynae/Obs

he Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was established in 2005 with up-gradation of the Maternity Unit of JDWNRH. The Department has moved to the new hospitial in November 2009. Since then, we have improved a lot in terms of having good facilities and provision of quality service to our patients.

Medical

The Department of Medicine is manned by two Internal Medicine specialists, two cardiologists, one Nephrologist, one Chest Physician and a Gastroenterologist. We were also supported by visiting HVOs in various disciplines such as Neurology, Infectious Disease Specialist, Gastroenterology and Geriatric Medicine.

Opthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology shoulders multiple responsibilities: it functions as tertiary eye care center for the country, resource center for Primary Eye Care Program for Ministry of Health, as one of the core department for faculty of Postgraduate Medicine, KGUMBS.

Orthopedic

The Orthopedic Unit of JDW National Referral Hospital is the apex orthopedic referral center in the country. Presently the orthopedic ward has beds for 30 in-patients, which remain fully occupied almost throughout the year.

Pediatrics

The department of pediatrics at JDWNRH celebrates the work that we do every day to provide excellent clinical care to children below the age of twelve and also to train the next generation of pediatricians thereby improving the health and well-being of children and their families here in Bhutan.

Psychiatry

Until 1997, there was no psychiatrist or dedicated mental health professionals providing mental health care services in Bhutan. With the starting of the Psychiatry Department in JDWNRH, it became the technical hub of the national mental health program, which continues to do so even today.

Surgical

he Surgical Department in Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital is formed in the year 2004. It deals with various surgical cases. There are 3 surgeons in the department. Some of them are expartriate hired by the government from outside country.
